The theme for our blog hop is "trendy tools and techniques".   I am doing a "one flower many looks" theme.  Over the next few days I will showcase various projects by my design team and I showing how to transform a plain paper flower into something amazing!  At the end of this blog post I will share with you the flower file freebie so you can experiment too.

For my project I decided to try something totally out of the box for me.  I am doing a shabby chic distress looking flower...well actually two flowers.  I am surprisingly pleased at how my card turned out and I hope you will be too. 

Above is my card. It  uses one of my newest files to the store card base 5.  The sentiment is a stamp by KI memories.  Now I will show you the other supplies I used to transform the flowers.  Below fhe supplies photo..I have posted a rather long (sorry) description of how I transformed the flowers for your FYI. 

 After cutting out two aqua flowers (one slightly smaller than the other) I stamped the flower with a script word stamp and Stampin' Ups Itty Bitty Backgrounds using distress ink.    I then took Tim Holtz paper distresser and distressed all the edges of the flower.  It still looked rather flat so I misted the flowers with water and crumbled them up. I then layered the flowers together offsetting them slightly.  It is hard to see in the photo but I cut a small circle of tulle and placed it in the center of the flower.  Then I added a beaded stamen type thing from the candle ring as shown in the photo.  I'm sorry I forgot to take a photo of the supplies I used in my orangish red flower but I followed a amazing tutorial by Laurie Zoellmer and used exactly what she used...crimper and brad.  Check out her tut here.  I will tell you though that I must of had thinner cardstock then her because I only ran my flower through the crimper about 7 times or I started to get rips.  Oh and I also added some gold spray glitter but the spray was clogged so I just dabbed it on.

Card Base 5

In case you are curious..here is the finished card I made with that card base.  All I had to do was add the Cakes are Yummy stamp by Rachelle Anne Miller, some flowers/leaves, and rhinestones.  Well I did add some glitter too but that's 'cause I can't resist the bling!  Oh and I know this is a square card...but did you know you can mail this in a regular A2 envy without having to pay any additional postage in the US?  Click here to see Julie's great tut to show you how.

Okay back to our "One flower many looks" theme.  You saw what I did now you will be amazed by one of my talented CDT members Shelly M.  Shelly's technique was to use seed beads.  She did an excellent job check it out below.

Here is what Shelly had to say about her great round card!

"Seed bead card - flower was inked with pink and brown chalk ink, I broke down the fibers for the top layer with a stylus and shaped them. For the center I cut two out and used one for a "cup" to keep the seed beads and glitter in. I did two layers of seed beads to give it some dimension. The card, layers, and "hi" are all by Quick Kutz."  

A fellow Paperthreads designer Laury Vaden of "Just Laury" made an incredible oval template using my plain flower and her spiral rose freebie.

Technique Tuesday: Circle Flowers and a freebie

Howdy,
Have you guys seen the latest issue of Scrapbooks Etc magazine?  The April 2010 issue contains some amazing flower making techniques.  I can't wait to try them all out.  I so wanted to share one of the techniques with you.  However, I don't want to infringe on any copyrights.  So I can't do any step by step photos or anything but I will tell you the basics and show you my examples.  Here is a circle flower I made using the digital cutter file I have provided you with as a freebie further down in this post.

 

Isn't it great!  As you can see it's completely made of circles!  Okay so get yourself some paper mixing various solids and patterns is fine.  This is a great time to use up your scraps...you'd be amazed what you can mix together and still get a great looking flower!  Cut out all your circles..now for the fun part!   Take out your stress on these little circles.  Crinkle them up, abuse them..they can take it!   If desired ink the edges of each circle or distress the edges with scissors or sanding block.  Layer them together on top of one another with the largest being at the bottom.  Perfectly center each circle or misalign...either is perfectly fine!  Now attach your embellishment of choice to the center.  That's it you are done!  Here are some of the examples I made..these are smaller because I used my circle punches for these.

 

These are just a few of the possibilities.   You could use crocheted flowers, glitter glue dots, letters, butterflies, charms, etc.    You could even use scallop circles to make these as well.  It's also fun to spray the whole completed flower with glimmer mist or apply glitter to the edges of each circle. You could also add some flocking to the flowers for a totally different look.

Below is a card I made for my daughter's Valentine.   The base is done digitally using Aussie Caz's layered PSD file she graciously donated for signing up for my sketch challenge on the PT forum.   The little girl is a digital stamp by Pixie Dust Studios.  Isn't it the cutest!  I did use some glitter glue on her...click on the photo to make it larger.   I also sprayed some gold glitter completely on my flower.  I used green netting for the leaves.  

 

My printer turned the middle purple square pink...UGH..hate when what I see on the screen doesn't match my printout.  I used my Copic markers to color the image.  Getting better but still don't know how to do hair!  My daughter did like it...so that is all that matters right!

Technique Tuesdays: Rainbow flowers and a Valentine Freebie.

Yes I know it is Wednesday.  Well what can I say...hmmm...I know I'll blame it on my 2 year old.  Sounds good to me!  Let's leave it at that and get on with the tut.

Actually you get two tuts today!  Yeah!  Games from the Paperthreads forum posted an image of a Pop up box she did using Whimsie Doodles Tut.  Click here to see it.  Also click here to see a you tube video with Dawn demonstrating the same technique.  I just new when I saw this I had to try it.  It's a great way to showcase those stamped/colored images.  I love how it fold flat for mailing too!

While I was embellishing my card....it occurred to me that I didn't have any flowers to decorate it with that matched.  I hate to admit this...I am a totally  a matchy type of girl.  I don't how how to do contrast without it looking totally bizarre.  So a lightbulb went on..if I could color ribbon with markers surely I could color flowers too.  So if you are a matchy type of person like me read on....

 

As you will see later I used brown, pink and orange in my Pop-up card.  So I wanted flowes with those colors in them.  These are ultra cheap fabric flowers..they are frayed around the edges and what not.  But with some Copics or any alcohol based markers these plain ol' flowers turn into a shabby chic MATCHY treasure! 

 

Not a very good photo because these aren't as splotchy in real life but you get the idea.  I put bands of colors on the white flowers using my copics.  I tried not to get to symmetrical with my rings because in nature flowers are far from perfect.  If you don't like my "rainbows"...you can easily just color them a solid color.  Okay so now you can see what I used these flowers on...

 

Now I'm kinda thinking these rainbow flowers look like turkey feathers.  Maybe I should have just stuck with solid pink!  Oh well it's done and I'm going to leave it be!  I do have a recipient in mind for this little cutie but her birthday isn't until the 20th.  Imagine that I'm early!  I had ulterior motives for making this card now though.  See the sentiment it is a freebie digital stamp by Paper Trey Ink designer Dawn McVey.  They are hosting a birthday bash on PTI and if I make something with this great stamp I get entered to win some free stamps so wish me luck!  I hate that you can't tell in the photo very well but each of the dots in the sentiment is covered in stickles and so are the hearts. If you click on the photo to enlarge you may be able to see it.  The cutie on the cupcake image is a wonderful freebie digital stamp by Digital Doodling. Isn't she adorable!

I showed my son the pop up card and he loved it.  He has a mind like an engineer so this was right up his alley.  So I had to make him one too.  

 

The adorable image on the card is from Dustin Pike.  It's a freebie too!   I loved coloring this little guy and I couldn't resist coloring the toe nails.  The sentiment is a stamp I designed myself...more about that later.   I figured my son would get a kick out of these glittery lips.  They are available in my digital cutter file entitled wedding charms.

Technique Tuesdays??? Adding Color to Embossing and a Freebie

Hello!  I do hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas and New Year breaks.  I also hope the work week wasn't too tough to come back too!  I know it's Wednesday and I'm just now posting my technique.  Oh well better late than never is the motto I'm following! 

Okay now on the the technique.  I just think Jennifer McGuire is one of the most talented people on this little planet we live on.  I marvel at how she has such a knack for knowing the perfect placement of embellishments and what textures and shapes to combine to create fabulous paper crafting projects.  Well I could go on and on about her but there is one video she did that captured my eye one day.  It is an older video but still a very good technique.  You can see the video on her blog here.  She used a Cuttlebug embossing folder on white core cardstock sanded the embossed part to reveal the white then used markers to color the embossed dots.  So simple yet so effective I just had to try it!  So see my examples below.

I used my 3-D butterflies file but replaced the body with grey gemstones and copper wire antennae.  Click below to see the file in my store.  I used my Copic markers to color the dots in three colors randomly.  You could use just about any type of marker though.  I know you are thinking this will take forever to do.  It goes quite fast as all you need a quick dab or two of the brush tip and it's colored.  When you are done it looks almost as if your card is illuminated with tons of tiny dots of light!  I would love to try it with the Copic Glitter Makers.

I had so much fun with that I just had to try embossing, sanding and coloring some more.  So this time I decided to do a Valentine and get a head start on that holiday!

This is based on a sketch by Mojo Mondays.  I used the floral fantasy Cuttlebug embossing folder along with white core burgundy cardstock.  I used just two colors of Copic markers...and left some images uncolored.   I love how some of the burgundy cardstock still shows through the colored images.  Makes the hot pink pop without being too overbearing and almost makes the paper look like I bought it that way!  All the other embellishments were cut from the ivory cardstock I also used as my cardbase.  I simply used the markers same markers to color them to match my background.  The gold hearts were embossed using my turning paper into metal technique found here.  The picture just does not do it justice..this technique is best seen in person for sure!  I used my Valentine Set available only in my quarterly membership.  There are still a few days to purchase it so don't miss out...click on the preview below.  (Oh and if you want to see all the files I have in membership so far check out the pink camera slideshow to the right).

I almost forgot.  The cute little bow was made using Michelle's wonderful bow template.  Click here to see how to make your own. 

I had a thought that you could do so much more with the Cuttlebug Swiss Dots folder.  As you can see below instead of coloring randomly I colored in diagonal lines.   I can also see this done in diamonds, zig zags, chevrons...you could even do shapes like an arrow to point to something on a layout or card.   Yep...I'll be seeing colored dots in my sleep!  LOL!  Oh and sorry about the poor photo but I think you can still get the idea!

Brett Robinson has been busy too making this adorable card using my Clothes Line Baby Boy Card file.

I'd also like to show you the newest file added to my membership.  It is a stencil designed to decorate the inside of a greeting card. 

The entire stencil will fit inside of a standard 5 x 6.5 inch card but you may be able to use just the greeting on an A2 card depending on which orientation you use.

In my example I sprayed a little temporary adhesive on the stencil. Then I used Michelle's wonderful air brushing technique done with Copic markers to color the stencil in purple and pink colors. (This looks much better, softer in person....I so want the Copic airbrush system now!) You can use glimmer mist, ink, chalks or whatever you'd like to color your stencil.

Technique Tuesdays??: ribbon wreath, tree, 50% off SALE, and freebie

I have been very busy getting ready for Santa.  Actually, I still have Christmas cards to make.  So when the Scal-hints yahoo group shared this video for making a woven ribbon wreath I just had to try it.  I absolutely love it!  Thanks guys and En-May!    It looks more complicated then it really is.  After you get the hang of it..it goes very quickly!

Below is the card I made with a wreath I made on my first try! I was in a hurry once again as this was a teacher's card. My son's last day was Tuesday and we were invited to the party so I was running out the door with this card. Thank goodness I didn't need any envy!

I used iridescent jewels on the wreath and bow but they don't show up very well in the photo.  The holly leaves is an actual metal charm.  However, I tried to mimic the look of the metal charm in the Peace charm.  I cut it out of paper then used my turning paper into metal tut from previous technique Tuesdays posts.  You can find it here if you missed it.  I used my Christmas Word Charms file.  Click on the preview below if you still have Christmas cards to make too!  LOL!    It's a steal at the special price of  $1.15!   Oh I almost forgot for the background paper  I also used my tut for making colored core cardstock found here.

As I mentioned I still have quite a few cards to make!  So I made another card using this technique. This card is based on a great sketch by Mojo Mondays....week 115.

Look closely.  Can you tell this ribbon was the same ivory ribbon I used in my first card example?  I bet you can't!  Want to know how I magically made this green ribbon.  See photo below.

You can use your Copic markers (and possibly Sharpies or Bic) to color white or ivory ribbon.  Use the broad tip of the marker and color slowly.  The ink will absorb into the ribbon and saturate completely even coloring the other side.  It may look a little splotchy at first but it will soak in and even out your color in a few minutes.  (Hmm I think I'll be stocking up on white or ivory ribbon the next time I go to the store!)  The Dew Drops started out clear too and I colored them to be ruby red jems with the Copics.  I just love these markers but I love them even more when I can find other uses for them!

The bow on the green wreath was made using Michelle Hessler's wonderful bow templates.  You can see the video tut on how to make templates and how to use them here.  

Since we are taking about ribbon.  I wanted to share with you a wonderful card my fabulously creative design team member Lisa made for me!  I just love how the ribbon makes the tree!  You can add the trunk and star from my previous "ribbon tree freebie" to make your own ribbon tree. Add some brads for ornaments and you are done!  Super quick but looks great!

Technique Tuesdays: Ribbon Tree, freebie and another teacher's gift

Howdy!
I hope you are all enjoying the holiday seasons. I am listening to Christmas music and it's cold outside. I was watching a movie about Chirstmas in LA. I can't imagine being in shorts and celebrating Christmas. Just doesn't seem like Christmas without having to bundle up!

Okay on to the technique. This is a quick simple one in which you can use up some of those ribbon scraps or ribbons you have too many of! I am demonstrating it being used as a tree but any die cut can be used. Remember you can click on the photo to see it larger.



A few examples for embellishing your tree. OH Psst...I have the tree freebie for you later.



Hints and Tips:
I used plain ivory cardstock for my tree because I knew the ribbons would cover the tree completely. If you are using sheer ribbons keep in mind your base tree will show through.

Scor-Tape or Terrifically Tacky Tape (Red-Line) hold very well just about anything you want to add to your tree. Seed beads look very pretty but know that your base will show through that is why I added them on top of the red ribbon instead of the actually paper tree. You can add glitter in the same way. Just lay down the tape and sprinkle glitter on top. Flower Soft would work too...how about trying candy sprinkles!

Dew drops, pearls, brads, or dots of glitter glue can be added to the tree to act as ornaments.

It is very important you get the glue evenly dispersed on your die cut. If you don't you'll get bumps or loose unattractive ribbons.

You WILL get some fraying. You can apply some fray stop to the ends if that bothers you. Personally, I think it adds to the handmade charm and I actually considered using my scissors to make the ribbon fray and doing a rustic looking tree!

You can use any shape you'd like to as your base die cut...but keep in mind you will have to trim the ribbons off later. More intricate shapes will be harder to trim around.

This method can be used to decorate a photo frame too. Ribbon comes in such a variety of colors and style..it would be very easy to make a frame to match your decor.

You can substitute the ribbon with paper strips. Please note things look better if you vary the widths of the paper strips. This is a fabulous use of paper scraps!

Below is my example of a rather non-traditional looking Christmas tree. I loved this paper and thought the ribbon strips went with it so well. My inking could have been done better though. Oh and sorry about the photo..I didn't have the best lighting when I took it and it was too dark to go outside.



I used my folded photo corners for this card. I love how they fold around the corner of the paper or photo so no glue touches the photos. These are also great for placing photos onto card fronts since the recipient can remove the photo easily when they receive the card. If you'd like to purchase the file click preview below.

I'd also like to share with you another teacher's gift I recently made. My son's teacher asked for hand sanitizer to be donated throughout the year so I decorated the bottle with a penguin. Penguins are their mascots so it is great for a Winter theme for the classroom. After taking the photo so you wouldn't see the glare I applied clear contact paper to my design to protect it from Kindergarten hands! If yours is all paper then decoupage is a great sealer. I just wasn't sure how it would react with the Flower Soft I used on the scarf and hat...or the rhinestones I used on the snowflakes.

Technique Tuesday: Turning paper into metal, new ornaments and a freebie

"Silver and gold, silver and gold. Ev'ryone wishes for silver and gold". Do you remember that song from the Rudolph movie? I can't get it out of my head so I decided to show you how to make your own silver and gold! Well sorta....I am going to show you how to turn your paper die cuts into silver and gold metal looking embellishments. I have mentioned this trick before and showed you the results of it on some items I've displayed on my blog in the past ...but....I never really gave you the directions on how exactly to do it...so now's the time! I wrote an article on this technique for a previous Paperthreads newsletter...so I figured sharing that article is the best way to show you that technique.

Above are my most recent results upon trying this technique. I used yellow pigment ink on the die cut tree with about 4 layers of gold embossing powder. The ornament hook I used silver pigment ink and about 4 layers of silver embossing powder. The photo just doesn't look nearly as good as the real thing. Trust me you will just have to try this and be utterly amazed. When I hold this tree in my hand..it look exactly like a wire pin!

Oh and to give your metal a slightly aged look use some black or brown ink or rub in buff. One more tip..don't try to emboss the back side...you'll completely ruin the front....ask me how I know this..tee hee!



Above is a quick card I used the tree on. Psst..the gold dots on the word "JOY" are so simple to make...just squeeze out dots of glitter glue onto a non stick craft mat or the backing to stickers. Let dry then whenever you need to make a card and make it quick you are ready. Simply peel off the dried glitter glue dots and attach with a Quicky Glue Pen. No need to wait for the glitter glue to dry! Yeah! The card uses my newest file swirly ornaments...click the preview below if you'd like to purchase it.
