Papertrey Ink Create Along With Us: December 2016

It's time once again for the Create Along With Us Challenge at Papertrey Ink.  The designer's have been super busy creating many wonderful projects during release week.  So the challenge involves picking one of their projects and using the supplies we have on hand to mimic it.

I chose a vibrant, gorgeous floral card by Kay Miller.

You can see more details about this wonderful card on Kay Miller's blog by clicking HERE.   I just love the colors Kay used so I was excited to get creating!  Here is what I came up with:

I chose to use Papertrey Ink's Floral Sketches as my floral focal point.   I brushed on tropical teal ink behind the bouquet just as Kay did.  To make things a little easier I arranged my bouquet where I wanted it on my card then I place Glad's Press and Seal over the bouquet and flipped it over.  The bouquet sticks to the Press and Seal making it easy to figure out where to put the inked  backdrop.  I have attached a photo below to show you better what I have described.   Laurie Willison has a wonderful video that shows Press and Seal in action.  Click HERE to see the video.

I wanted to add some shading to my solid stamped images.  So I took out my Prismacolor Pencils.  I simply outlined the edge of the flower with a pencil a shade darker than the ink I used.  I then blended out the pencil lines making them softer with Gamsol.  It is amazing what a difference that little bit of pencil makes.  See for yourself in the photo below:

I liked Kim's flower centers too so I mimicked them by drawing in the centers with a white gel pen.

I found this design to be quite versatile so I made 4 cards some with a few other sentiments:

I didn't think sequins would be appropriate if giving this card to someone who is having a hard time in life. So I drew in little 3 black dot clusters where the sequins are in the other cards.

Papertrey Ink Create Along With us November 2016 Challenge

This week Papertrey Ink released new products.  The design team was busy making projects using these products.  So instead of a technique video we are to use one of the design team's projects as an inspiration for making our own card.

Heather Nicolas did an amazing card that I just knew would be perfect for my son's 13th birthday.  See more details about her card here.
My son's favorite colors are orange and green so I used them as my go to colors.
My son purchased the Boy Basics: Game On stamp set a few years ago with his own money.  However, it has been woefully neglected lately so I was happy to use it on his card.   I stamped and then heat embossed video game images with clear ink.  I brushed over those images with PTI new leaf ink using clarity stencil brushes.  I love how smooth and effortless it is to add color with these brushes.  The candles are from PTI's Wishes Come True stamp set. The sentiment is from PTI's Bold Basics: Birthday die.  I cut it several times ad layered one on top of another for more dimension.  The blue stars are from a confetti pack from the Dollar Tree they replace the dots on the "i"s.  I actually embossed a full A2 size with the video game images and the part I cut off I gave to my son as a bookmarker.

Since my son's birthday is during pumpkin season he always asks for pumpkin pie for this birthday.  My sweet husband always makes hm one.  He made a smiley face in the pie with the candles since there weren't 13 left in the pack.

His sister bought him a whoopie cushion.  He just thought that was the greatest thing!  Here is a photo of him sitting on it.
I can't believe he is 13!  I am about 5'6" and he is almost as tall as me.  How did I get old enough to have a teenager!  Where has my little boy gone?  I found this photo of when he was 5
He may be bigger but one thing sure hasn't changed!  He loved Sponge Bob at 5 years old and still does at 13!

Gotta run!  Thanks for stopping by and please come back again!

Create Along With Us: September 2016 and Tutorial: Making smaller sequins

This is the week new products are released over at Papertrey Ink so instead of having a technique video challenge they give the designers a break and we simply choose one of their wonderful cards created during the release to mimic.

I immediately fell in love with Amy Sheffer's card below:
I love how she used the tag, holiday clusters and subtle ink blending on her card.  So I decided to make my own fall version.  See more info on her fabulous card on her blog by clicking here.

I combined several different stamp sets to make my floral arrangement.  The leaves were actually die cut from gold poster board a friend of mine generously sent me.  I don't often use gold..I don't know why because when I do guild it up I love the results!  I added some colored pencil shading blended out with gamsol to add depth to my stamped images.  I heat embossed the scripture sentiment with gold embossing powder.  I just love this sentiment..perfect for many situations!  I did some subtle ink blending in the background using a soft make up brush.  Ink spatters in watered down canyon clay add to the ink blending.  Look...look...I actually used an eyelet!  I have a ton of these lying around and was thrilled to use one.  Some gold and white fibers embellished the tag.  This is a large sized card 5" x 7" and I don't do well with white space so I hope it looks okay!  My elements just were too large to fit on a smaller card.

See those small gold sequins?  Well I made them so to speak...let me show you.

I used my Crop a Dile Big Bite to take a "bite" out of the large sequins to make them smaller.
I took a few photos to hopefully show you what I'm talking about.

Position your sequin on top of the specific sized hole you want your sequin to be centering it as best you can and press down the handle.  Viola!  You end up with a smaller sequin and a donut looking thing which would be good to save for shaker cards.   I do apologize I had the sequin on top of the smaller hole in the photo but I actually used the hole to the far left for my example sequins.  I was given a whole bunch of sequins from a lady who did sequined ornaments but I didn't have a variety of sizes so I was thrilled to find I can now make my own!

Papertrey Ink Create Along With Us August 2016

This week at Papertrey Ink the challenge is to be inspired by a project the fabulous design team created during the release this week.  I loved Betsy Veldman's card below:
You can get the details on how she created this beautiful card on her blog by clicking HERE.   I was also inspired by the latest color challenge at the Colour Q.
I just loved the combo of red and green colors paired with the dark grey background.  So I pulled out my Color Pop Florals kit and got to work!

I was soo excited to use this color combo but it ended up looking like a Christmas card!  It never fails..anytime I use red and green together I end up with a Christmas card!  Oh well it is still pretty and I am sending this to a friend in need of "healing wishes."  I heat embossed the center of the flowers and leaves with white emobssing powder.  The wishes die cut word came from PTI's Big Basics:  Birthday.  I simply cut off the "birthday" word to just use the wishes die cut word. The "healing" comes from the PTI Colorful Words stamp set.

I love this card design!  It works great with all the Color Pop kits or anytime you create your own stamped background paper.  This is the first time I used the little scallop feature of the Fishtail Banners dies  from Sunny Studio and I really love that little detail.  I did use the Clarity Stencil brushes with the stencils from the kit.  It did take a little while to build up this intense red color but I love the smooth finish.   They almost looked stamped instead of stenciled!

Papertrey Ink Create Along With Us July 2016

This week is the new product release week at Papertrey Ink.  The designers have been busy getting samples made with the new products so they haven't had time to film any technique videos.  So this week we are to make a card using one of the design team's cards for inspiration.

I knew right away which card I would choose as my inspiration piece.

Isn't that card designed by Dawn McVey just gorgeous!  You can see more details about the card on Dawn's blog here.

I dug out some much neglected patterned paper from Chatterbox and got to work trimming.  I didn't have the die Dawn used but I did have an old Creative Memories wavy trimmer which helped to trim the patterned papers into that curvy wave shape.  I gotta tell ya it feels wonderful to dig out some old supplies and give them new life!  I cut the Hugs die out of white fun foam to give it more dimension. I combined two different stamp sets to get the sentiment I wanted.  The "sending you"  and "and" sentiments are from Hero Arts Prayers stamps and the actual word "Prayers" is from PTI's Painted Petals stamp set. A few iridescent sequins finishes the card.

Since I had to cut into a 12 x 12 paper to make the card...I decided to make a few more cards.

I needed a bunch of thank you cards to send out.  However, my PTI "Thanks" was too large for this card design.  I remember Jennifer McGuire doing a video where she used the heat gun to shrink the fun foam so I did just that.  You can find Jennifer's wonderful video here.
Check it out!  The top is the size of the original die cut.  The bottom is the shrunken fun foam.  I know it's not a huge difference but shrinking made the die cut the perfect size for this card.  I cut off the "s" so I could add the sentiment from PTI's The Skinny stamp set.  I also added some clear Wink of Stella glitter to the blue part of the flower.  Oh and the flower center is colored in with a Copic marker.
