Mission Organization: Glitter glue, liquid pearls and paint

Hello,
Welcome to the next installment to my organizational series.  I do hope you have made some head way with your ribbon.  If you missed the ribbon organizing  post you can check it out by clicking here. Today I am going to discuss with you how to store glitter glue, liquid pearls and paint.  You can easily line these up on a shelf but if you start collecting many colors you may run out of space.  Plus glitter glue and liquid pearls are best stored upside down to prevent those nasty air bubbles from ruining your project.

First up I must apologize as these photos are not the best. I am using hubby's camera and I don't know exactly how to modify it for the lighting in my room. (My camera still works but we need to find a good CF card reader or a new cord so I can transfer photos to my computer). Anyway, above you will see one of my most favorite features of my craft room. I know you are probably thinking this looks awful!  Well what this metal shelving until lacks in style it makes up for in functionality. The whole surface is magnetic so I stick all sorts of items everywhere by attaching a magnet to the back. Also, the holes in the framing supports allow for little hooks and dowel rods to be inserted easily. It was hubby's idea to purchase this shelving until from a home improvement store long before I had an actual craft room but I'm soo glad I could make use of it now.

As you can see my glitter glue is stored magnetically under the top shelf. I got the idea from Christie Hund. You can see her totally gorgeous craft room here. I do not live near a craft store therefore often I make due with supplies I can find in my hometown. So I have some Stickles but I also have Studio G (which I think are just as good as Stickles) and even some glitter meant for craft foam I found on clearance). This storage method is perfect for me since I have various sizes of bottles...I can just space them out as needed.  I love that they are all visible and within reach of my desk.  I don't have any liquid pearls but you could store them just as easily using this method.




I used my high temp hot glue gun to apply the magnet buttons to the bottom of the glitter glue. I purchased them at Wal-mart in the kids craft section. They are 3/4" in size. I did try some larger 1.7 oz bottles of swirl glitter glue and they kept falling down but rest assured these particular magnets do hold the average size bottles (.5 to 1 oz)  perfectly.

I have removed some of the glitter glue bottles so you can see I store my Distress Crackle paint the same way by putting the magnets on the lids. I'm not positive but you could probably store the Adirondack Acrylic Paint Daubers this way too if they aren't too heavy.  You CAN'T store the traditional bottle of acrylic paint this way because they are 2 oz unless you get stronger magnets.

Materials needed for my glitter glue, paint and liquid pearl storage

Metal surface (ie. magnetic shelf, magnetic strip or cookie sheet)

Magnets (3/4" button magnets) available at Walmart

High temp hot glue or other strong liquid glue

If you don't have a magnetic shelving unit you can use a cookie sheet as seen above. Check out more info on Bea Originals blog here.
 

Velcro works in much the same manner as the magnets. Mariposa used an acrylic picture frame and velcro to store her bottles. More info here. You could easily place velcro anywhere you want to store your bottles even on the wall or inside cabinet doors.

Looking for a cheap storage solution that makes use of wall space...well Living/laughinscrapper did an amazing job with that as you can see above. She used those plastic mini storage crates and inserted the Stickles through the holes. See more info here.

If you have a peg board....Thistlegirl discovered screw driver holders fit Stickles perfectly. Check out her post here.

If you need portable storage...Army Scrappin' Diva has the perfect solution. She applied velcro to the lid of an Iris type container. That way when the container is closed the Stickles remain upside down.

There are several products on the market specifically made for storing these items.  I believe though my money is better spent making homemade and frugal storage solutions so that is how I chose what to present on this blog.  I'd rather spend my money on actual crafting  supplies.  I do have a few other options on my Pinterest site.  Click here to see my board.  If you aren't a member I'd be happy to invite you just give me your e-mail address.

I'm proud to announce a new member to my Creative Design Team. Caroline Stedman has agreed to be a part of my team.  Yeah!  Those of you who are familiar with Paperthreads and the forum are probably thinking Caroline..who is that!?!  Well she is better known as Aussie Caz!  I'm sooo happy to have this talented lady from down under on my team!  As I told her  she is "well-rounded" dibbling in all types of papercrafts and also digital scrapbooking including hybrid techniques.   So I'm sure she will be a great asset to my very talented team!  Caz shared a small bio about herself along with a photo check it out below.

"I am a SAHM to one very adorable boy, 14yo, and a Mum to four fantastic girls who are not living at home, 26yo, 25yo, 23yo and 21yo. I am married to my soul mate, Gary. We live in a rented farmhouse in rural New South Wales, Australia.

I have been scrapping since I was a kid, but recently discovered Digital Scrapbooking about 4 years ago. Then, about 2 years ago, a new world opened up for me. I purchased a Craft Robo and ventured into the world of Personal Cutters. 12 months ago a new Cutter hit the market and I traded in my Craft Robo for a 15inch KNK Maxx. Now I am broke through purchasing all the gorgeous files created by talented Designers that I just have to have, but the fun I am having overrides the expense . I love that this area of creativity joins together all the things I love, Scrapping, my KNK Maxx, Photography and my Computer (without which I am lost). I use PSCS3 and am learning about KNK Studio. "

It's only been a few days since Caz joined the team but she already has a project to share.   She took my Cupcake Card cutter file and turned it into a digitally created whimsically wonderful  card.    I love the little gems on the cupcake icing!  Psst..the sketch this card was based on is designed by Caz too and will be used for my April card sketch challenge on the Paperthreads forum.  I can't wait to try out the sketch myself..it's a great one!  Oh and Caz does designing of digital scrapbooking kits so if you'd like to get a glimpse of her work you can pick up a wonderful floral kit with awesome colors here on her blog. 

 I did manage to make a few cards myself.   Here is one using birthday monkey from Bugaboo Stamps.  I just think this little monkey is soo cute!  I wish I had a sewing machine or time to hand stitch but I had to get this card in the mail quick before it was late.  (One of these days I'll make up some birthday cards ahead of time!)

I used paper paint on the icing to give it more dimension.  Glitter glue was used on the hat, candle and platter.  Silver fabric paint was used on the fork.  Copics were used to color the image as well as the clear dew drops. The paper I used came from Transparent Touches kit #3 for March.  I just love this paper line and this kit!  To see another card made from the kit and more info on how to get your own kits delivered right to your door refer to this previous post. 

I finally got my Easter Tree digital stamp in the store.  I am pretty happy with the way it turned out!  I even drew up a title to match.  Check out the card I made with it below.  I experimented with my new Copic airbrush system for the stamp backgrounds.  I should have chosen more contrasting colors...oh well live and learn!  I do love the soft look it creates and if you used the brush end...it makes wonderful little dots!  I'm looking forward to using it again!

 I just love this stamp mostly because it's so easy to embellish with glitter glue, flocking or flower soft.   I used glitter glue on the eggs but I bet crackle paint would look awesome too!  Can you tell I love my embellishing tools!   This is a based on a Mojo Monday's sketch.

Technique Tuesdays: Making a 3-D Paper Button, a freebie, and membership file peek.

I love this technique! It is soo easy to do and a great inexpensive way to get coordinating light weight embellishments for all your paper crafting project. Oh I almost forgot I did not create this technique....you can find the original amazing tut by Fraulein here.

A couple hints:
*Be careful when you sand your buttons..don't sand so much you loose the shape of the button. Umm a hexagon can quickly turn into a circle before you realize it (don't ask me how I know this!--tee--hee)

*If you have access to Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel use it as you will get amazing looking buttons without all the work of adding layer upon layer.

*You can use any type of glossy accents in place of the embossing powder but you will need to leave your buttons set for a long time probably around 8 hours depending how thick you put on the liquid. You will have a hard time avoiding the holes using this but you can use a hole puncher like a Crop-a-dile to punch the holes after completely dry.

Plain buttons are wonderful but....there are soo many options for decorating your buttons. I will share only a few below.

Below is my completed card using one of the buttons I made. You can see it in the center of the flower. I just love how it coordinates with my background paper of my card! It's hard to tell in the photo but I used Copic At You Spica glitter markers for the Greeting on the purple letters and black letters. I just love these markers...the subtle glitter is great as it doesn't fight with the dramatic glitter of the swirly (used glitter glue on it).

I have seen this video for making your own glimmer mist by Tim Holtz and the one on two peas thinking ink classes but never got around to trying it that is until Lady Dawn started talking to me. I got all excited and had a birthday card to make so I figured why not give it a try! I am so impressed with the results if I do say so myself. I only had 3 bottle of distress reinkers (frired brick, faded jeans, and mustard seed) and the Perfect (Pearls Bronze, Gold, Copper, and Pearl). OH MY GOSH! In an effort to get out the package so I could list for you the colors of PP I had I spilled the entire container of copper! I did manage to salvage quite a bit of it and it did clean up well with Lysol wipes on my laminate floor and furniture. Actually, the copper sheen looked kinda nice on my black cabinet! Oh the waste though...I could just cry! Anyway, I was able to mix the reinkers to achieve almost all the colors I wanted except for purple....supposedly red and blue make purple but I couldn't get purple...mostly brown came out! I use my newly made glimmer mist for the card below. I am so tickled with the way the background came out...the shimmer is amazing in person but very hard to photograph. I also used the gold perfect pearl to highlight the stamped "happy birthday" sentiment.



I also used the distress crackle paint for the flower as you can see in the closeup. This stuff is wonderful....thin layer of paint equals small cracks like the ones in my photo. Thicker layer equals larger cracks. Just one step paint and let dry. So easy. I also enhanced the cracks with some brown paint.
