Papertrey Ink Make It Monday #247: Watercolored Card Set

This week's Make it Monday challenge at Papertrey Ink involved making a watercolored card set.  Melissa does an outstanding job showing how to make a wonderfuly artsy card set.  See the video HERE

I have always wanted to try watercoloring but I am the type of girl who DOES NOT color outside of the lines.  Although I loved Melissa's beautiful card set I could not bring myself to be carefree and messy and paint outside of the lines.  I was a little nervous about my first  major watercoloring project.  ( I did create some watercolored backgrounds before)   So I dug out my watercoloring pencils and my Papertrey Ink Peonies on Parade stamp set.  Stamping on bumpy watercoloring paper doesn't give you the smoothest images.  Thankfully I have the MISTI and was able to stamp each image 3 times to get good coverage. 

I do like the end result but it seemed to take forever and a day to complete this!   I tried my best to do lots of shading and try to add shadows and such to make it look more realistic.  It also took me a long time to blend out the pencil lines with water and figure out what color would add some depth to my plain pink flowers.  I really don't think this looks much like water colored flowers but more like colored pencils blended with Gamsol.

So I watched the video again and decided to try a more carefree approach to my next card.

This time I used distress ink and dye ink inkpads to achieve the watercolor looks.   I used Fantastix to get the ink sponged into the tiny areas of the stamped image then added water to blend everything out.   This took much less time but still looks artistic.  I still used the watercolor pencils to get the blue shadow around the flowers .  I also put drops of plain water on the image after I was done painting just as Melissa suggested.  I love the way it almost erases some of the ink leaving lovely color variations.   So I tried a few more dye and distress ink combos to complete two more cards to make my set.

 Sorry I don't have a photo of all the cards together in one photo.  I had to mail/give my Mom's day cards out earlier and just now finished up the last two cards in the set today. 

I am pretty happy with the way these turned out and I look forward to doing more watercoloring in the future.

ColourQ #224 challenge card

I am was very happy to be able to participate in the latest Colour Q challenge.  Take a look at these colors:

I have to admit..I wasn't too sure about these colors.  I would never put them together in an outfit myself but it does look good together on that shirt in the inspiration photo.  So...I was anxious to see how they would look on a card.  Here is my end result. 

Sorry about the bad photo...these color really do look quite nice in real life!  I know you are thinking...what a Mother's Day card...too early for that..Valentine's day is next...right?!  Well you see those hearts there..this was supposed to be a Valentine's card.  I used a file coming soon to my store.  It was fun cutting the outline and placing the hearts randomly in the overlay.  I love this Happy Day stamp set from Papertrey ink.  I knew I wanted to use it for the sentiment on the card.  The only problem is I had purchased a partial set and Valentine's wasn't included in the set I received (duh..should have checked first!).  So I figured Mother's day would be the next best thing to use with the hearts.  I have to say normally I'm rushing to put together a Mother's day card a day before the holiday so it will be nice to have this in my stash.  Let's see the hearts were stamped with various patterns using the Happy Hexagons stamp set from Papertrey Ink.  The stamps just so covered the hearts so if I didn't get them lined up exactly I had some white spots but that didn't really bother me too much..I just stamped the white spot again to cover it.     I loved having another use for this well loved stamp set.  After piecing the hearts in I ran the entire card front through my Grand Calibur using a Stampin' Up texture plate. Love how it integrated the hearts into the card while giving it a store bought texture.  Some space beads, rhinestones and twine finish up the card.

Papertrey Ink MIM #64 and holy hexagons!

I'm sorry I know it's been ages since you heard from me.  I have been busy as I'm sure many of you have been too.  I will share with you some of what I have been busy doing.  I did manage to get a new file...well two new files done too!

First up this week's Make It Monday challenge at Papertrey ink involved Nichole Heady sharing how she goes about designing a card.  The video depicts how she uses the rule of threes to make her cards.  I found it quite informative..check it out here.  Nichole challenged us to use some of the color combos she posted.  I fell in love with many of them but only had time to use one for now (saved them for later)...so I chose...

 Don't you just love those yummy colors!  In fact I love the shirt too..wish I owned it!  LOL!  Oh and I apologize once again for the bad photo..that is what happens when I craft at night!  One of these days I'll get a light box!

I need to put an order in for ink since sadly I didn't have these colors but...I made it work!  I decided to use my newest file Digi Card Template 3 and my digital Cosmo Cricket papers.  I pulled papers from many different collections and recolored them using Photoshop to match my color combo.  I had a great match on screen but once again the blues printed slightly greenish but it still looks pretty good to me.  So I printed the background as one layer.  Then I added the label and pennant from my Card Base 11: Hexagons.  I stamped the inner label with the pansy from Papertrey Ink's  year of flowers collection then heat embossed it with white embossing powder.  The sentiment is also from PTI Year Round Puns stamp set.  I then used embroidery floss to do the stars and added some pearl paint to the middle of the stars.

Hubby and I celebrated 15 wonderful years together yesterday...well really we aren't celebrating until tomorrow but we did exchange anniversary cards yesterday. 

Once again I used my Card Base 11: Hexagons file.  The papers are from the Sugared Collection by Basic Grey.  What I love about this file is you don't need to place a whole bunch of single hexagons.  I designed a series of overlays that stack to get the quilted effect!  Easy!  I didn't have enough patterns so I simple stamped some polka dots on the plain orange paper to serve as another pattern.  The hearts are from my Floral Mom Tag 2 file.  The numbers are from my number charms file.  I colored them with a metallic copper paint pen and then added several layers of UTEE to make them look more like metal.  The sentiment stamps is from PTI's Everyday Classics stamp set.  I used my sew easy to help stitch the circular border under the sentiment.

Adoree's preschool had a fiesta party today.  It was soo much fun!  They did games with a sombrero did crafts and even did the limbo with balloon inflated cactus.  I just have to share this photo!

This just cracks me up!  The teacher bought the kids stick on mustaches!  Soo funny and soo cute!
