Papertrey Ink Make it Monday #239 Customizing Patterned Paper

This week's Make it Monday Challenge at Papertrey  Ink involves customizing patterned paper.  Lizzie demonstrates just how to do this in a great video.   Check it out here.
I don't have a lot of masculine cards in my stash so I knew I wanted to use this challenge to make a masculine birthday card. I had this Lotus paper pack by Amy Butler.  It has lots of floral prints in it so I pulled out the two masculine prints and went about making my card.  I pulled the blue and green colors from the striped paper to choose my ink.  I stamped little tiny dots from Papertrey Ink's first stamp set called Paper Tray.  I used the bulls-eye and tiny dot stamps to stamp rolls of circles within the paper printed circles.  I added a little distress ink to give some depth to the die cut balloon ad added an string to the balloon to enhance the blues in my card.

Papertrey January Blog Hop Challenge

Hello! It's time for another Papertrey Ink Blog Hop. This month Nicole has picked out a wonderful piece of art by Rex Ray to inspire us to create a card.

For some reason when I looked at this photo I thought of balloons floating in the sky so thus the card below was born:

I created a soft cloud background using Jennifer McGuire's wonderful technique using  distress ink found here.  I used foam tape to pop up three of the ballons for more dimension.  I think if I were to make this card again I would mask off the greeting so the balloon strings run behind it.  I would love to try this using balloons die cut from scrap cardstock.  This would make a good scrapbuster card!  I also like that it could work for masculine bithdays...a topic I often struggle with!

Scrapbuster Card and Color Throwdown #375

I'm back again!  Can you believe it only 1 day between posts!   As I mentioned in yesterday's post one of my goals for 2016 is to use some of my neglected crafting items.  So I thought it might be good to do some scrapbuster cards.  Okay so you may be asking what is a scrapbuster card?!  Well in my eyes it is a card that uses up little scraps of paper.

When I first started card making my card designs centered around patterned  paper and solid paper die cuts.  Then I got into stamping and using ink on my cards and my paper got neglected.  So when I saw Michelle's wonderful card I just knew it was perfect for those little solid scraps of paper that I can't possibly throw away.    Take a good look at this graphical beauty!

Check out the deets on her blog Here.   I just love how the focal point is tilted and the dramatic contrast of the bright colored cardstock against the soft stone background!

Trying to keep my trend of doing more challenges going I decided to duplicate this card but use the colors in the latest Color Throwdown Challenge.

Here is what I came up with:

It's hard to tell in the photo but originally the birthday word die cuts didn't stand out from the background that much so I took a thin black sharpie and roughly drew in a shadow.  I took a photo of this in progress and that little bit of black really makes a difference.

I did emboss the sentiments but they didn't get raised much when heated.  Does embossing powder get old?  I've had this stuff forever and I could have sworn it was more raised in the past.  I added teeny tiny black rhinestones to the sentiments as a finishing touch.

I always try and make more than one card since I have everything out it is just as easy to make  4 versus one.  I had plenty of scraps left too.

I wanted something a little more bold and colorful this time so thus the rainbow die cuts on the black background.  I switched out silver rhinestones for black. I rounded both bottom corners too.

Hopefully I'll discover more scrapbusting card designs and share them with you in the future.  I will label them as such so if you ever get tired of all your scraps collecting dust you can find my posts easily.

Color Throwdown 366

I just loved Danielle Flanders "quick birthday cards in a pinch" tutorial at the Weekly Scrapper. You can see the tut here.  I always seem to be making cards at the last minute so I decided to make a few of these myself.  I decided to use the latest  color throwdown challenge.
I have to admit I never in a million years would have paired mint green with orange but it looks great!
The word celebrate is a free die cut file from Scrapbook and Cards Today.  "Its your" comes from Papertrey ink's Wonderful Words: Bithday Mini stamp set.  The word "birthday" comes from Papertrey Ink's Vintage Picnic stamp set.  I hand drew the exclamation points.   It's hard to tell in the photo but the stars are actually glittery.  I punch them out of white, colored with white wink of stella glitter brush maker and layered on top with glossy accents.  It really looks like a purchased embellishment in person.  I think the stars make this card a little more masculine then the sequins Daniel used.  I did one more card in mint green too.

A friend of mine gave me a bright paper pack to make some cards for her.  I tend to shy away from big bold colors but I figured this style of card would work well for this pack of bright colors so...

It was nice participating in a challenge again.  I look forward to doing more in the future!  Thanks for stopping by!  Please come back again!

Papertrey Ink Stamp-A-Faire 2015

Papertrey Ink  has hosted their annual Stamp-A-Faire this weekend.  It was amazing filled with many inspiring technique videos and tons of challenges.  In case you missed all the fun you can find info on Nicole Heady's blog HERE.

Patterns Challenge:
My daughter loves when I write messages on her napkin for her school lunch.  I decided it would be neat to tuck a little card inside her lunchbox tomorrow so thus this card was born.  I used PTI Flippin Out stamp set.  My daughter is all about the bling so I used glitter silver embossing powder for the sentiment and added some rhinestones to the flip flops.

Threads Challenge:
I am hoping to use this as a more masculine card.  I used PTI Happy Hexagons stamp set.  The sentiment is from PTI Beautiful Butterflies.

Mix and Match Challenge:

I was inspired by Lisa Johnson's amazing card HERE.   The butterfly is from PTI Round and Round Anniversary Set.  The sentiment is from PTI Year Round Puns stamp set.

 Accessories Challenge:

My kids watched practically all of the crafty videos with me but my daughter got extra excited about these bracelets.  She couldn't wait to turn Popsicle sticks into jewelry.  She decorated the bracelet with some black and white daisy paper and PTI button dies but she couldn't resist adding more bling with the silver butterfly.

So I didn't get quite as many challenges completed as I wished but I am sure all the projects and videos will come in handy long after these challenges are over.    One last look at all my cards for the Red Carpet challenge.

Papertrey ink Make it Monday #216

This weeks Make it Monday video over at Papertrey Ink involves adding color to cover plates.  Check out the great video by Laura Bassen here!

I only have one cover plate die.  I bought the PTI's Text Block:  Birthday die.  I had yet to use it so it was fun to have an excuse to get it out.

I got the color scheme from the latest Color Throwdown challenge.  (I have another card that showcases these colors better so I'll share that card tomorrow.)  I decided to use MIM # 204 Watercolor Smooshing to add color to the cover plate.  I have always wanted to try this technique and it actually was quite fun!  I used watercolor paper to prevent a lot of warping.  I thought these colors reminded me of the beach so I made some "waves" using PTI's scallop die from the Nostalgic Notions kit.  I was going for a masculine looking card so I forced myself not to add any more embellishments.  All in all I think it turned out pretty well since I am terrible at masculine cards.

Thanks for looking!  Please come back again!

PTI SAF projects!

Gee look at the title posts...too many abbreviations huh?!  Well it means Papertrey Ink's stamp-a-faire.  I have been having soo much fun over the past few days watching all the inspiring tutorials and oohing and awing over all the amazing projects.  I got quite a few cards done.  I actually am ahead of the game for upcoming  birthdays and anniversaries so..thank you PTI!  Oh in case you missed the festivities..the tuts can be found still on Nichole's blog here.

The way stamp-a-faire works is you are given a challenge and if you complete the challenge you earn a badge.
Knots Badge- Ribbon Techniques Challenge

Betsy showed us an amazing technique using bitty dot ribbon curled into these wonderful flowers by using the heat of a candle flame.  Betsy made it look effortless but I had a hard time getting the hang of how long to hold the ribbon near the flame.  In fact I had a some of my ribbon singe.  So I decided to go with that and turn my card into a shabby chic version of Betsy's wonderfully bright example.    I stamped Turning a New Leaf in Memento rich cocoa ink.  I added small flowers from Honey Bees in Memento Sweet Plum.  The sentiment is from Everyday Classics anniversary set.  I really need to invest in some of those super sized sentiments!

Craft Conservation Badge- Limited Supply Challenge

For this challenge we were limited to the following supplies:

  • STAMPS: Natural Beauties only (or another floral set as a substitute if needed)
  • PAPER: Stamper's Select White, Hawaiian Shores, Aqua Mist, Simply Chartreuse
  • RIBBON: Hawaiian Shores Bitty Dot
  • BUTTONS: Simply Chartreuse
I do not have Natural Beauties so once again I turn to Rosie Posie (the only PTI truly floral set I own).  Well leave it to me to make a limited supply challenge complicated.  I decided to use my Card Base 5 cutter file simply because it had those two tabs draping from the top..a perfect place to set my buttons.  I have always used two patterned papers when using this file in the past.  So since our supplies were limited that meant I had to stamp my own background papers using only the Rosie Posie stamp set.  So I did hexagons for the 1st patterned paper and for the next I used the leaves and center flower dots (absolutely love the way this one turned out!).  Now looking at the completed card..I could have easily used a green solid paper in place of the first patterned paper.  Oh well..I never do things the easy way!

Rainbow Badge- Tie-Dye Techniques

Nichole showed us some awesome ways to add tie-dye to our paper projects. The one I decided to make involves Copic markers and rubbing alcohol.   This is soo out of my comfort zone.  I don't do this bright hardly ever..but the technique was fun to do and I think this will be perfect for a teen's birthday!  I don't have the marker colors on hand but I used the one listed in the store that coordinate with Pure Poppy, Hawaiian Shores, and Summer Sunrise.  The sentiment is from an very old set called simply Paper Tray.

I showed Tyler the latest MIM video which involved rolling a die to determine specifics of what kind of card will be made.  He thought it was really cool and wanted to try it!  I don't often let my kids play with my good crafting stuff as they have their own things.  But...he is 8 so I think it's about time I shared a little!   So we got the sheet out and filled it out and got rolling.  Amazingly enough he got some of the same things I did!

He got the following:
Horizontal card, sketch 2, Year of Flowers (main image), My Punny Valentine (supporting sentiment), Pure Poppy, Summer Sunrise, and Hawaiian Shores color combo and twine.

Before we began making his card..he saw the video for SAF by Heather making wonderful felt badge embellishments.  Now he absolutely loves to stitch things with embroidery floss so he wanted to incorporate that into his MIM card.  So we added a few more supplies to the MIM criteria and here is what he came up with.

I know I am a little partial being his Mom and all but I am soo proud of what he created!!  He stitched the felt all by himself!!  He wanted embossing since my card was embossed but knew he couldn't stamp on the lumpy cardstock so he decided to stamp the flowers and sentiment onto the same color of cardstock so they would blend in.  See the one daffodil where he moved the stamp a little..well he says that's okay as it just make it look like it's blowing in the wind.  I thought he'd want to add jewels to the centers of the flower but no he got out my yellow brads because that is what he envisioned.  We almost forgot about the twine but he had the perfect way to add it as a grounding point for the daffodils. I think this is just amazing creativity for an 8 year old boy!  He glued everything on himself even!   So...I think Tyler deserves the DIY:  Homemade embellishments badge.   Don't you!?!

Here is a photo of him happily stitching away!  Oh sorry he doesn't have a shirt on...he hardly ever wears a shirt in the summer!

Tyler had a set of dog tag type necklaces but the chain broke so he fixed it by adding yarn to make a chain.  We were headed to the store and he had a shirt on so I told him I wanted to take a pic of him quick with his card.  He decided to hang it on his necklace.  Too cute!

Just look at that face!  He is super thrilled with his card!   Hmm...do I have a future scrapbooker?  Maybe I should let him scrap some of his own pages since I'm sooo far behind!  Now Adoree is beggin' to play with Mommy's stamps too.  I promised her there would be another challenge tomorrow and she will have her turn!  Sooo stay tuned!

I have until 12:00 noon to complete a few more projects for SAF so I hope to get at least one done if the kids let me!  Thanks for stopping by!  I hope you had a fab weekend!  Please come back again!
