Papertrey Ink MIM #243 Ink blending over heat embossing and Colour Q #334

This weeks Make it Monday Challenge over at Papertrey ink involves ink blending over heat embossing.  Dani has an amazing video showing this technique check it out here.

I also sought out the latest Colour Q challenge for my color scheme.

I decided to pull out my first ever kit from Papertrey ink.  I have always ooed and awed over PTI's kits but many of them were way out of my price range.  So when Color Pop Florals was introduced I was delighted to finally be able to order a kit.  In this kit you get a massive amount of supplies for your money... stencils, stamps, dies, preprinted images and preprinted card bases.  I chose one of the preprinted card basis for my card.

The preprinted card base had white spots for the leaves and flowers.  You simply position the stencils over these white spots and sponge on the ink.  So  for this challenge I stamped PTI's mehndi medallion mini stamp set in the center of the flowers instead of the flower centers that were included in the kit.  I heat embossed the medallions with clear embossing powder.  That way the white cardstock would show though when ink is applied over top. The stamps, and die cuts I used was included in the kit.  I had a hard time with this card. I felt it was too flat as I'm used to more dimensional cards.  I did cut the sentiment from fun foam to add some dimension.  I still wasn't happy so I used a Copic marker to shade around all of the images to add some depth.  I used a white gel pen to add small dots to the small flowers and leaves.  A few sequins finishes the card.  I am still not loving it though!

Papertrey March Blog Hop Challenge

Isn't that picture just gorgeous!  This is our inspiration for the latest blog hop at Papertrey Ink. I love how the artist combines embroidery with drawing!  There is more info and more photos on Nicole's blog here.  It's eye candy so go and check it out!

I absolutely love using stitching on my scrapbook pages but always forget to use it on cards.  So I was excited to participate in this challenge!  I used Weathered Wood distress ink sponged onto  PTI Soft Stone cardstock in an effort to mimic the artists wonderful background.  Then I used a stitching template from Oriental trading to poke holes in my cardstock for the swirls.  They were stitched with 6 strands of embroidery floss pulling colors from some of the artist's prints.  A few PTI The Sweet Life flowers were added along with leaves using Memento Pistachio dye ink.
Roses:
Layer 1
Memento Summery Sky
Layer 2
PTI Blueberry Sky
Layer 3
Memento Nautical Blue

Easter Treats!

We were all commenting on the Papertrey Ink forum the other week about how expensive metal dies are getting to be.  Don't get me wrong I know they are a great value and it sure beats fussy cutting but still it is an investment.  So I wanted to create something to make for our church craft and bake sale that would use these dies.  This is what I came up with:

These little treats have a peppermint patty tucked between two card stock shapes.  I looked at soo many ideas on Pinterest for these treat and I actually combined several ideas to create my own shapes.  Click here to see some of the ideas I found.  Did you know that the York peppermint patty is no longer in foil round wrappers?  They are all square now.  I used the Pearson brand since they still are round.

I also made some pretzel sleeve ones and filled them with M&Ms and jellybeans.  Apparently we come from a chocolate loving town because everything sold but the jellybean ones!

I did these at the last minute.  So my friend helped me glue a lot of these together.  I was very happy to have her help!  She was frustrated with all the little pieces.  I didn't think it was too bad because being a paper crafter I was happy to use up some of my little scraps of cardstock.  Next year I will have to start these ahead of time so I don't have to bother her again!

I will just give you a basic idea of what I used for the shapes and if you need more instructions please let me know.

Chick:
  • scallop circles (3)...wings are cut from a scallop circle as well but you can get several wings out of one.  I simply snipped a wing out of one with scissors and then traced around that shape to cut the others so all of my wings were the same.  I shaded the yellow pieces with distress ink to give them some depth
  • flowers (3)...one for head and two for feet.  Don't cut flower in half for feet..it's too hard to glue (I used PTI flower fusion #3 die)
  • arrow for beak..fold in half and cut off extra that way you still have a pointed beak but also have the flat part of the arrow to glue to your chick
Bunny:
  •  circles (2)
  • hearts (3) (2 layering)...I didn't have any ovals that were skinny and long so I used hearts for the ears 1 pink and 1 white. You also need 1 small heart for the nose. I inked the edges of the white pieces with pink distress ink.
  • small circle (2) for the cheeks
  • add whiskers with a black fine tip marker
Lamb:
  • scallop circles (2) I embossed these with a swirl pattern embossing folder
  • oval for face
  • smaller oval cut in half for ears
  • flowers (3) for wool on face (I used PTI's flippin' out die collection)
  • some sort of label or tag for the feet
I used a label from Quickutz special delivery dies gift set which I don't think it available anymore.
The die is perforated  so I just cut at the fold and then cut in half long wise giving me enough legs for 2 lambs.  You could use a rounded rectangle or something similar.   Actually the feet aren't necessary for either the chick or the lamb.  I just thought they were cute and I'm a sucker for not knowing when to stop adding things to my creations!

Oh and I forgot to mention google eyes were used for all the animals.  I glued them on with multi-matte medium.  This step was a bit tedious as the eye are small and they kept moving around when gluing but once dry they were stuck on well.  I really didn't want to have to cut tiny pieces out of paper for the eyes.

Thanks for stopping by!  Happy Easter!  Please come back again!

Papertrey Ink Create Along With Us March

Papertrey Ink has a create along with us challenge this week. The way this works is you pick a card from one of the fabulous design team and use that as inspiration to make your own card.  I chose to mimic Ashley Cannon Newell's gorgeous card: (check out her blog to see more of this card here)

Ashley's  card is soo great that I didn't change much at all.  Why mess with perfection..right!  Below is my card:
I didn't have the paper Ashley used so I used PTI's autumn pattern pieces stamp set to mimic the plaid paper.  I also substituted felt rick rack for the red ribbon.  I did add a little bit of Prismacolor pencils blended with gamsol to try and make the cake look more rounded and give some depth to the strawberries.  Oh and I used a different sentiment on the bottom but it's the same just in a different font.

I simply love this new just desserts set from PTI!  It has numerous stamps that can be used to assemble various layers of cake and icing.  I can't wait to try a chocolate cake with peanut butter icing.  Yummy! There are many options to adorn your cake with too..in addition to the strawberries you can use candles or flowers. Yep...you will definitely be seeing more of this set in the future! The only downside of using this stamp set it that it makes me hungry for cake!!!

Need an opinion please.

I purchased a sparrow stamp  from PTI's Spring Woods set.  I didn't have any type of branch stamps to set the bird on.  So I went about making my own with some left over red rubber I had lying around. Please tell me what you think.  Does this bird look at home? Keep in mind this is a prototype only.  I have to work on leaf/flower placement and lining up the bird better.

The flower and flower center if from PTI's honey bees stamp set and the leaves are from PTI's turning a new leaf stamp set.
Thanks for looking!

Papertrey Ink Make it Monday #242 and Case This Sketch #162

This week's make it Monday video over at Papertrey ink involves sponging on various inks onto your stamps to get a multi-colored blended image.  Check out Dawn's fabulous video here.

I decided to also participate in the latest Case this sketch challenge.

Here is my card:

I really struggled with this card.  I pulled out the striped pattern paper. I really wanted to use the pint jar stamp so I pulled the colors from the paper for my flowers. My original thought was  to place the jar on a banner type shape.  However, I stamped the jar too far down on the paper to do that.  So thus the scallop rectangle.  I originally wanted the striped paper to cover the entire card front.  For some reason this seemed too busy.  I'm still not sure I'm loving the layout of the card but I do love how the jar turned out.  I used 7 different stamp sets to complete this card.  The flowers I used were short stems so I used the balloon strings slightly curved to make stems. I used glossy accents on the jar to give it some shine like real glass.  I also put a little bit of watercolor pencil inside the jar to make it look like water and a little under the jar for a shadow.  A little bit of jute string finishes off the card.
